Blue Plaque Trail
David Cockman
Today’s speaker was David Cockman Holme Valley Civic Society who spoke on the “Blue Plaque Trail” in Holmfirth part 1. A leaflet is available at the Holmfirth library.
He gave an excellent audio visual presentation stressing the historic plaques scheme was introduced in the 1880’s and at a cost of approx. £250 each funded by Kirklees council. He also stressed the complicated process of permitting the plaques to be placed.
David spoke at length on the plaques on The Drill Hall, The Victoria Hotel, The Railway Station, Alms Houses and Bamforth and Co .
A insight into the history of Holmfirth including the dam breach in the 1850’s was of great interest to members.
