Speaker Stuart Hartley
After explaining his background in architecture, Stuart gave a detailed talk
about some of the many Yorkshire people and organisations that have made
major contributions to our national life.
He pointed out that the Tour De France Depart and the Tour of Yorkshire
cycling events had raised the county’s tourist profile. Among the many national companies with Yorkshire origins, he included
Asda, Morrisons and Iceland. He spoke in detail about the Iceland founder
Malcolm Walker.
Among others mentioned were Percy Shaw (Cats eyes), computer pioneer and
mathematician Professor Tom Kilburn, Joseph Priestley, discoverer of oxygen,
Sir Donald Coleman (Bailey Bridge) Sir Robert Edwards (test tube babies) and
many others. With a nod to equality, he included Lady Betty Boothroyd, former
Speaker of the Commons.
