Convoy of Hope
Frank Wright
Today's speaker was Frank Wright from Mirfield who spoke on "The Convoy of Hope" which was to take a convoy of humanitarian aid to the Ukraine in 2001.
He described how 20 Rotarians met to decide how they could physically take as much aid to the people of Ukraine as they could and of how they collected supplies and begged for transport to make the long journey.
Frank gave an entertaining account of how 3 ancient buses and a 40-ton lorry negotiated the trip from Hull docks through Europe with breakdowns, red tape, toilets and accommodation all presenting their own challenges.
He described the awful conditions that they witnessed, especially for the children, and clearly the aid was essential.
