Crime, Punishment and Rehabilitation
Mark Braithwaite
Today’s speaker was Mark Braithwaite who was giving his fifth and final talk to us. Mark joined the Police force in the 70’s and was promoted through the ranks to become Detective Chief Superintendent of Cleveland Police. He was involved in some high profile cases, John Darwin the canoe man and the murder of Julie Hogg to name but two.
Marks talk today was titled Crime, Punishment and Rehabilitation. A extremely interesting talk as usual from Mark which created a lot of debate among the members, with differing views about how we should punish people who commit serious crimes.
There are 141 prisons in the UK with 90,000 prisoners and it costs the taxpayer £50,000 a year for each prisoner.
