History of Hanging
Patrick Robertshaw
Today's speaker was Patrick Robertshaw who spoke about "hanging" and started by pronouncing the death sentence on Peter Robertshaw assisted by the in role Chaplain Graham Smith and which set the scene for a though provoking talk about the history and politics of the death sentence here and around the world. He described the process of hanging in detail and gave examples of how justice was often not served and the doubt that the death penalty may not be a deterrent to further offending. The end was 1965 when it was abolished.
He answered questions from members who were clearly reflecting on what they had heard.
